Every October, communities across the nation come together to observe Substance Misuse Prevention Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of substance misuse and promoting healthier choices for youth and adults alike. 21 Wellness Coalition is a resource that provides prevention and educational resources right here in Weston County. We know that we can strengthen our community by focusing on education, connection, and support, because prevention starts with understanding.
Substance misuse affects people of all ages and backgrounds. Early prevention and open conversations can make a lasting impact, especially when it comes to youth. Having hard conversations with youth and teens can seem like an impossible task, but we are here to help! We offer support and resources, like our Operation Parent Handbook, that can make these conversations feel less difficult. When we educate youth about the risks associated with drugs and alcohol, we empower them to make informed decisions about their health, identity, and futures.
For youth, building resilience through positive social connections, hobbies, and emotional support can reduce the risk of experimentation and misuse. 21 Wellness Coalition and its partners are proud to support programs in both Weston County School Districts that help foster these important connections. We talked last month about Sources of Strength and how it can help positively impact mental health among students. However, when it comes to peer pressure with substances like nicotine, drugs, or alcohol, programming like this can help build community and act as a safety net.
21 Wellness Coalition is dedicated to connecting individuals and families with local prevention and treatment resources. Whether you’re seeking information on how to start a conversation with your teen, looking for community programs, or in need of recovery support, there are resources available to help you every step of the way.
