Wyoming, while high ranking in land size is less populated per capita than any other state in the United States. “One town with long roads” is a descriptor often attributed to our state, meaning, while we are spread throughout the state we are all connected by community and take pride in taking care of one another in times of need.
Rural conditions pose challenges outside of economic hardships, for some a quick trip to the store is a struggle; reliable transportation is needed to travel further distances, requiring planning and time dedicated to making the trip.
As a less populated state, food resources such as grocery stores are less abundant and can be difficult to access. In 2024, the Torrington Telegram revealed that food insecurity is a large concern for a large percentage of the population in Wyoming. In fact, 24.1% of Wyoming’s population is over the age of 60 and 1 in 15 experience food insecurity.
Consider an elderly neighbor who faces limitations when it comes to transportation. Navigating a rural town without reliable access to public transportation or the ability to safely and comfortably operate a vehicle can make something as simple as a trip to the store a significant challenge.
It’s evident that food insecurity can affect anyone, but what’s most important when these situations arise is knowing that you do not have to navigate these trying times alone.
