Quit for Good

Nicotine addiction remains a public health concern in the United States, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether through cigarettes, vaping products, or smokeless tobacco, nicotine can have lasting effects on physical health, mental wellness, and quality of life. Quitting nicotine is one of the most impactful steps a person can take to improve their health, and support is available both nationally and locally here in Weston County.

Health experts agree that nicotine use increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and several types of cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, quitting nicotine lowers blood pressure and heart rate within minutes and improves circulation and lung function within weeks. Over time, the risk of developing smoking-related diseases continues to decline, even for those who have used nicotine for many years.

Beyond physical health, nicotine addiction can also affect emotional well-being. Many individuals report increased anxiety, irritability, and dependence tied to regular nicotine use. Studies show that quitting can lead to improved mood, reduced stress, and a better overall sense of control. Quitting also protects family members and others from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and vapor.

Because nicotine is one of the five most addictive substances in the world and research shows that those who receive support in their quit journey are 3x more likely to quit for good than those who try to quit on their own, we encourage you to check out the support services available. The Wyoming Quit Tobacco Programis 100% free for Wyoming residents and offers the support of a proven program through trained quit coaches with the option of several free nicotine replacement therapies. National resources are available to help individuals quit nicotine at no cost. The National Quitline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, connects callers with trained cessation counselors who provide personalized support, quit plans and coping strategies. Smokefree.gov, a federal resource, offers online tools, text-based programs and mobile apps designed to support people quitting smoking or vaping. These services are evidence-based and available to people at any stage of the quitting process.

Local support is also available in Weston County through the 21 Wellness Coalition and Weston County Public Health 21 Wellness focuses on prevention, education, and community connection to reduce substance misuse and promote healthier lifestyles. By working with community partners, health providers and families, the 21 Wellness Coalition helps connect residents to nicotine cessation resources and other supportive services. Their approach emphasizes education, empowerment, and long-term wellness rather than judgment. 21 Wellness partner,  Michelle Sweet, RN at Weston County Public Health is a trained cessation provider and can help you determine if medication or nicotine replacement therapy will work for you. It’s as simple as calling Michelle at 307-746-4775 ext. 105 to set up an appointment for an intake assessment. Michelle is available to help with all nicotine addictions- smoking, vaping and spit tobacco and says, “My main goal is to help you stay nicotine free by offering relapse prevention. If you slip, it doesn’t mean that you failed. It only means that we need to start over and try again.”

Quitting nicotine is often a process rather than a single event. Many people make several attempts before quitting for good, and each attempt builds experience and resilience. With access to national quit lines, online tools and local organizations such as the 21 Wellness Coalition, individuals in Weston County have multiple pathways to support.

Health matters at every stage of life. Choosing to quit nicotine is an investment in a healthier future, stronger families and a more resilient community
